Our Beginning 1961
  • In August 1961, it was announced at the 2nd meeting held  of a proposed golf course for Hartley,  that 80 acres of land have been purchased. The site is known as the Louie Voss Farm.  Located on the east side of the road, 3 miles south of Hwy. 18 on the Hartley-Sutherland blacktop road.

  • ​​Mr. Everett Dunn has agreed to take charge of the layout and construction,
  • Articles of incorporation were approved and a board of directors of nine members will be elected. 
  • One of 2 names presented by the committee of ladies was adopted at the meeting. - Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club
August  1961
  • Board of Directors Meeting on August 24th, engaged Mr. Bill Adams, of Sioux City to assist in the layout of the new course.
  • Mr. Adams has been the pro at Sioux City Boat Club for many years  and considered one of the top golfing experts in the nation.
  • Mr. Adams and Mr. Dunn made a tour of the course and proposed a layout with an estimate of costs.   
August -Nov. 1961
  • Work preparatory to seeding the fairways has been progressing at a rapid pace and seeding is expected to be underway this week of August. Volunteer crews have also been cleaning up the groves and the future clubhouse area. 
  • Donation of Trees needed for the golf course. Residents of the area were asked to donate trees for the new golf course. Trees 1 ½ inch in diameter are acceptable.
  • Tree planting date was planned for  Nov. 4th.
1962
  • A benefit Dance to help raise money for development of the Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club was held at Neebel's Danceland in Hartley on January 23, 1962. Music wias furnished by Tommy Smith & Orchestra. Tickets $1.00
  • A Family potluck picnic was held on July 1, 1962 to ready course for opening July 15th

  • June 28- At this time crews were organized for building bridges, cutting brush, hauling dirt etc. 
  • Women worked on greens - on Friday. 22 women came out to the course to pull weeds from the greens. 48 turned out to help on Monday evening and coffee was served by Mrs. Jackie Gable.
  • Frequent rains - postponed opening day to July 19, 1962
July 19, 1962
  • ​​The New Course was opened to the all golfers today.  
  • There was still work to be completed but greens and fairways were in good shape. Half season family memberships will be on sale or pay daily green fees.  
  • Golfing supplies will be available as well as lessons.
  • The course is described by experienced golfers as one of the better nine hole courses in the area .  There  are large grass greens and natural water hazards. 
August -Nov. 1962
  • Many items donated to golf course. 
  • Ball Rack, Swing set ,Picnic tables, Benches,   Lawn chairs, Jungle Gym, Refrigerator , Cupboard unit, Dishes, Electric Roaster, Electric Coffee pot, folding chairs, merry go round, paint, croquet set, display case, silverware, waste baskets and coffee server.
  • Sept. 2 - special event held at Meadowbrook. A courtesy breakfast with guests from Sanborn, Melvin and May City. 110 in all  and a tournament followed.
  • Ladies tournaments were held and men's steak fry in Sept.
